I asked my audience a simple question: where is the best pizza in Michigan? The answers poured in from every corner of the state. I tallied the votes from my socials, and here is the top five. If your favorite didn’t make the cut, that just means you need to vote louder next time.
1. Hotel Tavern, Springport
The Hotel Tavern is a small-town bar and grill at 119 E. Main St. in Springport, and it took the top spot. Its signature is the Hotel Tavern Special Pizza, a loaded thick-crust pie, alongside pepperoni, taco, and pickle pizzas. Pizza runs Monday through Friday from 4pm to close and all day Saturday and Sunday. Locals know to call ahead on busy nights because pizza orders can take a while, and that tells you everything about how good it is.

2. Klavon’s Pizzeria & Pub, Jackson
Klavon’s sits at 1361 E. McDevitt Ave. in Jackson, built around handcrafted pizzas and a lively sports bar room. The menu covers three styles: their signature Chicago stuffed pizza, Detroit-style squares including the Detroiter, and classic American hand-tossed pies. They also run a drive-thru window and a rewards program, which tells you the regulars keep coming back.

3. Charles & Reid, Traverse City
Charles & Reid is a Detroit-style pizzeria at 113 E State St. in downtown Traverse City, opened in May 2020 by Dan and Kristin Karabacz. The menu is built on named pies like The Brick, The Bandit, and Bee Nauti with soppressata, capicola, fresh mozzarella, and a hot honey drizzle. They bake in small batches with weekly rotating specials and close when they sell out, so get there early.

4. Buddy’s Pizza
You can’t talk about Michigan pizza without Buddy’s. The Detroit-style originator has been serving its square pies with the cheese-to-the-edge crust since 1946, and it now has locations across the state. It’s the rare chain that Michiganders claim as their own, and the votes showed it.

5. Piper’s Mighty Good Pizza, Harbor Springs
Piper’s is a Harbor Springs favorite at 974 W Conway Rd, the kind of place locals recommend to every tourist who asks. Reviewers rave about generous toppings, a perfect chew on the crust, and their Harbor style deep dish. If you are up north and want pizza, this is where the locals go.
