Your Weekly Five: 5 Michigan Businesses Worth Your Halloween Weekend

Five businesses, one from every corner of the state, all worth knowing.

Happy weekend, Michigan.

Halloween week is here, and so is gift season. I picked five Michigan businesses worth your weekend, and a few of them have perfect timing if you are starting to think about holiday shopping. Every week I pick five small businesses doing something special, one from each of our five regions, so no matter where you live there is always someone nearby worth supporting. Let’s get into it.

Southeast: Nocturnal, Monroe

Nocturnal is a gothic themed evening coffee haunt in Monroe, and it might be the most Halloween perfect pick I have ever had for this newsletter. It lives in a building that has stood in Monroe since 1849, and the owners turned it into a cozy after hours spot for handcrafted drinks and desserts, with a bookshelf and board games if you want to linger. Follow them at @nocturnal.monroe.

West: Bowerman Blueberries Farm Market, Holland

Bowerman Blueberries Farm Market in Holland is the kind of place that makes West Michigan feel like West Michigan. It is a farm market known for its blueberries, plus their own brand jars, preserves, salsa, and BBQ sauce. Catch the farm market before the season wraps, and if you miss it, their gift boxes are available online all year. Follow them at @bbfarmmarket.

Mid-Michigan: Bayt & Brew, Flint

Bayt & Brew is a women owned coffee shop in Flint, and the name tells the whole story. Bayt means home in Arabic, a warm, safe place where love lives. Coffee, matcha, lattes, chai, fresh baked goods, and an owner who makes everyone feel welcomed. Follow them at @baytandbrew_.

Up North: Cutler’s, Petoskey

Cutler’s has been serving Northern Michigan since 1965, and if you are starting your holiday shopping, this is your stop. Kitchen gadgets, home decor, women’s clothing, unique gifts, and their gift wrapping is always free, a tradition generations of shoppers know well. Find them in Petoskey’s Gaslight District. The U.P.: Upper Peninsula Supply Co., Marquette

Since 2008, Upper Peninsula Supply Co. has been celebrating the U.P. with original apparel, prints, art, and gifts designed by their own team. Run by a photographer who knows the region’s soul, they have shipped their designs all over the world, and the downtown Marquette storefront has an online shop too. Another great gift season find. Follow them at @upsupplyco.
