The Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbor Brewery Spotlight: Marquette, Michigan

The building at 119 S Front St in Marquette has been standing since 1883. In that time it has served as a saloon, a meeting place, and now one of the Upper Peninsula’s finest dining and brewing destinations. The Vierling brings all of that history along without letting it get in the way of a great meal.

The Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbor Brewery sits at the edge of the city’s historic downtown with views toward Marquette Harbor and Lake Superior. The dining room inside the Victorian-era building has the warmth of a place that has hosted generations of Marquette residents, with dark wood, local art on the walls, and a menu that takes Upper Peninsula ingredients seriously.

Lake Superior whitefish, pasties, locally sourced produce, and a menu that changes with the seasons give the kitchen constant material to work with. The fish dishes in particular draw diners who have driven considerable distances to eat here.

The brewery side produces a lineup of craft beers made on site, from lighter lagers to robust stouts that fit the UP climate. Sitting by the window with a pint and a view of the harbor on a clear day is the kind of experience that makes Marquette feel like one of the most underrated cities in Michigan.
