Horton Bay General Store Spotlight: Horton Bay, Michigan

Horton Bay is a blink-and-you-miss-it community on the shore of Lake Charlevoix, a few miles from Boyne City. Ernest Hemingway spent summers in this area as a young man, and the Horton Bay General Store is where he came for supplies, for conversation, and eventually for the wedding ceremony that marked the beginning of his first marriage in 1921. A hundred years later, the store is still there.

Located on Boyne City Road in Horton Bay, the general store has been operating in one form or another since 1876. The current operation leans into its history without letting nostalgia become the whole point. Cold drinks, snacks, local goods, and the kind of old-screen-door atmosphere that disappears from the world a little more each year make it worth stopping in whenever you are passing through the Charlevoix-Boyne City corridor.

Visitors who know the Hemingway connection come specifically for that reason and find a place that carries its history lightly. Visitors who stumble in while exploring Northern Michigan’s back roads find something harder to define but equally satisfying: a genuinely old building that has been doing the same thing for a very long time and has no immediate plans to change.

Horton Bay is a short drive from Charlevoix, Boyne City, and the Lake Charlevoix shoreline. It is the kind of detour that makes a Northern Michigan trip feel complete.

Michigan Small Business Spotlight is proud to feature the Horton Bay General Store as one of Northern Michigan’s most historically rich and authentically Michigan small businesses.
