Cellar Bird Books Spotlight: Grand Rapids, Michigan

Lea spent more than a decade in the animation film industry before she decided to follow a completely different dream. In the fall of 2021 she and her husband moved to Grand Rapids, found a city they fell in love with, and opened a bookstore. The result is Cellar Bird Books — one of the warmest independent shops on Grand Rapids’ West Side.

Located at 415 Bridge Street NW, Cellar Bird Books carries a thoughtfully selected collection of new books for all ages — not a warehouse of everything, but a careful edit of what is actually worth reading. Alongside the books, the shop carries literary-themed gifts, puzzles, greeting cards, notebooks, and handcrafted items from independent makers. Nothing in the store is there by accident. The curation reflects a genuine point of view about what a neighborhood bookshop should feel like.

The Name Has a Story

The name Cellar Bird comes from the store’s own history — birds have been found flying around in the basement. It is that kind of place: quirky, warm, and full of small surprises. The shop has the energy of something built out of genuine love for books and community rather than a business plan, and that shows in every visit.

Events and Community

Monthly book clubs run throughout the year, and author events bring the community into the shop regularly. Cellar Bird Books is open Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 6 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM. The West Side neighborhood is better for having this shop in it, and the broader Grand Rapids book community has embraced it.
