Keweenaw Mountain Lodge Spotlight: Copper Harbor, Michigan

Copper Harbor sits at the very tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, the narrow finger of land that juts into Lake Superior from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Getting there takes effort no matter where you start, and the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge at the end of that drive is exactly the kind of place that makes the effort feel right.

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project, the lodge was designed to provide employment while creating a destination in one of Michigan’s most remote and beautiful corners. The hand-hewn log cabins, the main lodge building, and the grounds they sit on are a direct product of that New Deal effort, giving Keweenaw Mountain Lodge a history that connects it to a specific and significant chapter in American life.

Today the lodge operates as a destination resort with accommodations in the original CCC-built cabins, a restaurant serving hearty UP-appropriate meals with local ingredients, an 18-hole golf course cut through the forest, and access to the mountain biking and hiking trails that have made Copper Harbor a destination for outdoor enthusiasts from across the Midwest.

Lake Superior is visible from the area, and the night skies above Copper Harbor are among the darkest in the Midwest, making stargazing a genuine attraction alongside everything else the peninsula offers.
