Janet Webster Jones opened Source Booksellers in Detroit in 2008 with a clear purpose: to create a bookstore rooted in African American intellectual tradition and open to every reader who values thoughtful, curated literature.
Located at 4240 Cass Ave in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, Source is a gathering place as much as it is a store. The shelves carry an intentional selection of titles in African American literature, history, philosophy, education, and the arts, alongside children’s books, poetry, and works that reflect a wide range of human experience. The store’s depth in its specialty is difficult to match anywhere in Michigan.
Janet has spent decades building a community around books and ideas. Author readings, book discussions, and cultural events bring Detroit residents in regularly. The store carries titles that larger retailers overlook and introduces readers to voices they might never have found otherwise.
Source Booksellers has received national recognition as an important independent bookstore, and it remains one of Detroit’s most vital literary destinations. In a city with a rich tradition of Black cultural life and intellectual achievement, Source is a natural fit.
