There is nothing else quite like Legs Inn anywhere in Michigan. Possibly anywhere in the country.
Located in the tiny Lake Michigan village of Cross Village, Legs Inn was built by Stanley Smolak, a Polish immigrant who arrived in northern Michigan in the 1920s and spent decades transforming a piece of land on the bluff above Lake Michigan into something that defies easy description. The building itself is constructed using natural materials including tree roots, driftwood, and local stone. The roofline is lined with cast iron stove legs facing skyward, which is where the name comes from.
The result is a restaurant and bar that feels like a folk art installation, a Polish supper club, and a Lake Michigan overlook all at once. The view from the outdoor deck is among the most dramatic on the entire shoreline.
The menu centers on traditional Polish cooking: pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, beet soup, and dishes that trace directly back to the Smolak family’s heritage. The food is hearty, honest, and deeply satisfying, exactly the kind of meal that makes sense after a long drive through the woods.
Legs Inn is seasonal, open late May through October. Cross Village is about 20 miles north of Petoskey on M-119, the scenic Tunnel of Trees road.
