Lea spent more than a decade in the animation film industry before she decided to follow a completely different dream. In the fall of 2021 she and her husband moved to Grand Rapids, found a city they fell in love with, and opened a bookstore.
Cellar Bird Books is located at 415 Bridge Street NW on Grand Rapids’ West Side, and it is the kind of shop that feels like it was built for the neighborhood. The shelves are stocked with a thoughtfully curated selection of new books for all ages, plus literary-themed gifts, puzzles, greeting cards, notebooks, and handcrafted items from independent makers. Nothing in the store is there by accident.
The name comes from the store’s own history: birds have been found flying around in the basement. It is that kind of place, quirky and warm and full of small surprises.
Monthly book clubs run throughout the year, and events bring the community in regularly. Open Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 6 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM.
Visit at cellarbirdbooks.com or stop in on Bridge Street.
