In 2005, Corktown was one of Detroit’s more overlooked neighborhoods. Michigan Avenue had seen better decades. A BBQ restaurant opened at 2138 Michigan Ave and, in the way that happens when the food is genuinely exceptional and the timing is right, things started to change.
Slows Bar BQ arrived at a moment when Detroit’s food scene was beginning to rebuild, and it became one of the restaurants most associated with that rebuilding. The slow-smoked meats are the foundation: pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and chicken done with the patience and precision that real barbecue demands. The smoking takes hours. The results justify every one of them.
The sandwich menu elevated Slows beyond a typical BBQ joint. The Yardbird, the Reason, the Wham, each built with the kind of ingredient combination and structural logic that earns the kind of coverage Slows received in national food media within a few years of opening. People came from outside the state specifically to eat here, and they left talking about it.
The beer list has always been thoughtful and Michigan-heavy, pairing with the food in a way that reflects genuine care about the complete experience. The restaurant expanded over the years as demand required, and additional locations followed in Ferndale and Grand Rapids.
Corktown today is one of Detroit’s most vibrant neighborhoods. The story of how it got there runs through several front doors, and Slows Bar BQ is one of them.
