There is a farm in Benzie County where grain is grown, harvested, and distilled into whiskey on the same property. That is the idea behind Iron Fish Distillery, and it is what makes the drive to Thompsonville worth every mile.
Located at 14234 Dzuibanek Rd in Thompsonville, Iron Fish opened in 2014 and has built a reputation as Michigan’s first farm distillery dedicated entirely to American whiskey. The grain they use comes from their own fields and from neighboring farms. The water comes from a spring on the property. The distilling, aging, and bottling happen right there. When you hold a bottle of Iron Fish whiskey, you are holding something that started as seed in that soil.
The product lineup includes bourbon, rye, single malt, and seasonal releases that reward customers who pay attention. The tasting room sits inside a restored century-old barn with views of the surrounding farmland, a setting that earns its reputation as one of the most beautiful distillery experiences in the Midwest.
Food is available on weekends, local and thoughtfully prepared to complement the spirits. Events and barrel picks bring enthusiasts out throughout the year. The whole experience is grounded in the belief that where something is made matters as much as how it is made.
