Detroit has its first Filipino bakery, and it is everything the city has been waiting for.
JP Makes and Bakes, located in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood, is the dream made real by owner and pastry chef Jonathan Peregrino. After more than 15 years in corporate sales and marketing, Jonathan walked away from the desk to pursue his passion for baking, earning professional training at the Academy of Pastry and Bakery Arts in the Philippines. He went on to compete on Season 7 of the Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship before spending years building his following through pop-ups across Metro Detroit.
Today, from his permanent home on Woodward Avenue, Jonathan offers Filipino inspired baked goods infused with ube, handcrafted chocolates, cookies, fresh coffee and espresso, and savory lunch bowls rooted in the flavors of his heritage. Every item is made with care and intention, bringing a piece of Filipino culture into the heart of Detroit.
JP Makes and Bakes is the kind of business that makes a neighborhood better simply by being there. Detroit’s food community has welcomed Jonathan with open arms, and the full house is proof.
Stop in, support a dreamer who did the work, and taste something truly one of a kind.
