Polish Village Café Spotlight: Hamtramck, Michigan

Hamtramck is a small city entirely surrounded by Detroit, and its identity has been shaped by wave after wave of immigrant communities who made it home. The Polish community that arrived in the early twentieth century built churches, bakeries, social clubs, and restaurants that gave the city a character still felt on every block. Polish Village Café is one of the best surviving expressions of that character.

Located at 2990 Yemans St in Hamtramck, Polish Village Café serves traditional Polish cooking in an environment that has changed very little since the restaurant established itself as a neighborhood anchor. The pierogi are handmade, boiled and then pan-fried in butter to the correct golden edge. The stuffed cabbage rolls are done right. The beet soup, the hunter’s stew, the kielbasa plates, and the rest of the menu reflect the actual cooking of a culture rather than a caricature of it.
