What started as a single roadside stand in Glen Arbor has grown into a full brand built entirely around Michigan cherries, and the flagship store in the heart of Leelanau County remains the experience worth building a trip around.
Located in Glen Arbor just outside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Cherry Republic sells hundreds of products made with Michigan-grown tart and sweet cherries: jams, salsas, sauces, chocolate-covered cherries, cherry-infused wines and beers, cherry candies, dried cherries, cherry butter, and on and on. If cherries can be put into something, Cherry Republic has probably tried it.
The store itself is a destination. Samples flow freely, the energy is festive, and the staff operates with genuine enthusiasm for the products they sell. Out front, there are rocking chairs, a bocce court, and space to slow down and enjoy being somewhere beautiful.
Bob Sutherland founded Cherry Republic in 1989 with a commitment to Michigan agriculture and a sense of humor about it. The motto “Life, Liberty, Beaches & Pie” sets the tone. This is Northern Michigan fun taken seriously.
